The Anatomy of a Window

Windows have many different parts and each one plays a large role in a unit’s overall performance. Knowing the anatomy of your window serves as a guide when choosing what type of window is best suited for your home.

Renewal by Andersen® of Knoxville, your leading provider of custom windows, discusses the elements that make up your windows.

Frame

The frame serves as the skeleton of your windows, as it supports the whole system. It’s the part directly anchored into the wall opening upon installation. It consists of three main parts. The top region is known as the head, the bottom is called the sill, and the jamb refers to the vertical parts that hold the sashes.

The material used for the frame can determine the strength, durability, and energy efficiency of your windows. It may also affect the temperature of a room, depending on its insulation properties or lack thereof. At Renewal by Andersen, our bay windows and other units are made of Fibrex®. This patented material combines wood’s heat control and resilience features, as well as vinyl’s low maintenance quality.

Glass

The glass is another important component of a window. The type of glass used contributes to natural insulation and temperature control of your home. We offer advanced glass packages that are sure to reduce unnecessary energy consumption in your home. When compared to ordinary dual panel glass, the High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass is found to be 56% more energy-efficient in winter and 45% more energy-efficient in summer. The High-Performance Low-E4 SmartSun® option, on the other hand, was revealed to be 45% more energy-efficient during winter and up to 75% more energy-efficient during the summer.

Sash

The sash refers to the operable part of the window, usually holding the glass. It can either glide, as seen in sliding windows, or swing open, like it does in casement windows. It’s often made of the same material as your window frame. The size of the unit’s panes can determine the amount of natural light entering your room and how much of the outdoor scenery you can view.
